Like many Mid North towns, Carrieton grew around a watering place, Yanyarrie Whim, on the droving route through Eurelia, Orroroo, etc and on down south. The line of that route can still be seen in the pattern of subdivisions allowing for a wide droving road between titles, that route now subdivided again into small acreages.
The Quorn to Orroroo railway passed near to Carrieton in 1882, making the town a centre for the surrounding wheat farmers, but Goyder's Line proved to be accurate and insufficient rainfall forced many away from the land.
Carrieton is now home to the annual Carrieton Rodeo and, although a small town, has a swimming pool, tennis courts, cricket oval, the rodeo ground, campdraft grounds, walking trails and a rifle range.
