In 1848 Matthew Smith and Emanuel Solomon bought 85 acres (34 ha) of land near Port Pirie Creek, (named after the ship, the John Pirie, the first ship to navigate the creek to transport sheep), and subdivided the land into the township now known as Port Pirie. The government town was surveyed in 1871.
Declared South Australia's first provincial city in 1953, Port Pirie is now South Australia's second largest port. It is the sixth most populous city in South Australia after Adelaide, Mount Gambier, Whyalla, Murray Bridge and Port Lincoln.
With the Southern Flinders Ranges forming a spectacular backdrop to the east, Port Pirie now has the multi award-winning Port Pirie Regional Tourism and Arts Centre and the Port Pirie Regional Art Gallery which are open daily. It has a National Trust museum in the former Ellen Street Railway Station - left behind when the railway track down the middle of the main street was relocated - and has, of course, numerous water-based facilities from boat ramps to Solomontown Beach. There is an abundance of picnic areas and children's playgrounds.
Having become a substantial regional centre, Port Pirie is well supplied with a variety of shops, small businesses, health, sporting and educational facilities.
